Zojila Tunnel entrance in Ladakh, newly excavated, with equipment and workers.
India has achieved a significant infrastructure milestone with the completion of excavation for the 13.153-kilometer Zojila Tunnel. This project, with an investment of Rs 6,500 crore, is poised to ensure year-round connectivity between the critical regions of Kashmir and Ladakh, overcoming the severe connectivity disruptions typically caused by winter conditions.
The Zojila Tunnel, touted as the world’s longest bi-directional road tunnel, is expected to revolutionize travel dynamics in the region. Beyond enhancing convenience for commuters and tourists, the tunnel is set to bolster the local economy by boosting tourism and significantly improving strategic access for logistical and defense purposes.
This engineering accomplishment is anticipated to have a profound impact on the socio-economic landscape of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, fostering development and strengthening national security by ensuring uninterrupted movement of people and goods.
