Multi-story residential building under construction in an Indian city.
The Indian government has issued an advisory to state Real Estate Regulatory Authorities (RERAs) recommending a four-month extension for project deadlines. This move is intended to alleviate compliance pressures on real estate companies and ensure the completion of ongoing projects, particularly those impacted by supply chain disruptions stemming from the geopolitical situation in West Asia.
The advisory specifies that eligible projects with completion dates on or after February 28, 2026, may be considered for these extensions. Consequently, homebuyers could face possession delays of up to four months for projects falling under this new directive. The final decision on the uniform implementation of this central government’s recommendation now rests with the individual state regulators.
This measure comes as a response to the logistical challenges and increased costs faced by the construction sector due to global supply chain instability. By providing a grace period, the government aims to prevent project defaults and maintain confidence within the real estate market.
