India’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation experienced a notable cooling in July, dropping to 9.78% from the previous month’s figures. This deceleration is largely attributed to a significant moderation in the rise of fuel and power prices, which eased to 20.05% in July compared to 27.41% in June.
While the overall wholesale inflation trend showed improvement, the WPI Food Index saw a slight increase, rising to 6.65% in July from 6.14% in June. This suggests that while global commodity price pressures, particularly for energy, have eased, food inflation remains a point of attention for policymakers.
The reduction in fuel and power inflation is a positive development for businesses, potentially leading to lower input costs and a dampening of broader price pressures across various sectors. This easing of wholesale inflation could provide some fiscal space and potentially influence monetary policy decisions in the coming months.
