AC compressor assembly on a modern production line.
Consumer appliances startup Atomberg is set to collaborate with Tata-owned Voltas in a significant joint venture aimed at manufacturing compressors for room air conditioners (ACs) within India. The agreement, formalized through a binding term sheet between Atomberg’s B2B subsidiary, Atomberg Innovation Private Limited (AIPL), and Voltas, signifies a strategic push to bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities in the high-growth AC market.
The proposed joint venture will focus on the development, manufacturing, and supply of AC compressors, with an emphasis on energy efficiency, operational reliability, cost-competitiveness, and increasing local sourcing of components. Voltas will serve as the anchor customer for the venture, ensuring a stable demand base, while also allowing the JV flexibility to supply compressors to other market participants, thereby enabling scale and long-term competitiveness.
This partnership aims to leverage Voltas’ extensive market reach, with over 30,000 touch points, and its expertise in manufacturing and supply chain management. Atomberg Innovation will contribute its deep-tech capabilities in compressor technology, engineering, and product design. Manoj Meena, cofounder of Atomberg, highlighted the synergy, stating, “This partnership gives us the opportunity to combine our technology strengths with Voltas’ extensive air conditioning expertise, manufacturing capability and market scale.”
The formation of the joint venture is contingent upon the completion of due diligence and the securing of necessary regulatory approvals. Atomberg, which has been actively expanding its B2B manufacturing operations through AIPL, is also preparing for its own public listing, aiming to raise between ₹1,500 Cr and ₹2,000 Cr.
Founded in 2012, Atomberg has established a reputation for energy-efficient products, initially gaining traction with BLDC fans before diversifying into other home appliances. The company has secured substantial funding to date, supported by investors including Inflexor Ventures, Trifecta Capital Advisors, Steadview Capital, and Temasek.
