Indian engineers and policymakers discuss solar energy on a rooftop overlooking Maharashtra's urban landscape.
Maharashtra is a frontrunner in India’s solar energy sector, driven by initiatives like MSKVY 2.0 and PM Surya Ghar, accounting for nearly 20% of the nation’s rooftop solar installations. At the Solar Trailblazers event, industry leaders highlighted the state’s aim to reach 16,000 MW of solar capacity by March 2027, with approximately 5,000 MW already integrated.
Despite progress, stakeholders voiced concerns over policy inconsistencies and financing gaps, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Alternative financing models, such as large manufacturers acting as guarantors, are being explored.
Urban areas in Maharashtra face challenges due to space constraints, prompting discussions on virtual net metering and balcony solar. The retail segment is growing, shifting from large-scale projects to residential and small commercial consumers.
While Maharashtra’s industrial base and rising energy demand offer fertile ground for renewable energy, sustained growth requires stable policies and innovative solutions for urban areas and financing. The panel encouraged new entrants into the sector, including operations, maintenance, design, consultancy, and financing.
