"ANTHROPIC AI PROJECT MYTHOS - OFFLINE" sign in a foggy server room
Anthropic, a prominent AI development company, has been compelled to suspend access to its latest AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, following an export control directive from the U.S. government. This move, enacted just days after the models’ launch, has intensified the ongoing debate surrounding sovereign artificial intelligence and the national security implications of advanced AI technologies.
The directive specifically ordered Anthropic to block access for all foreign nationals, including non-U.S. employees within the company. This has effectively led to a global suspension of the models for all customers, underscoring a shift in how rapidly evolving AI systems are perceived – not just as software products, but as technologies with significant national security ramifications.
Concerns Over AI Model Security
While Anthropic has complied with the directive, the company has stated a lack of clarity regarding the precise reasons for the U.S. government’s intervention. Based on internal discussions, Anthropic believes the concern may stem from a technique that could potentially “jailbreak” Fable 5, allowing users to bypass some of its built-in safeguards. However, Anthropic has contested the significance of this finding, noting that similar capabilities are widely available in other existing models and are utilized by cybersecurity defenders.
Anthropic has expressed disagreement with the notion that a narrow potential jailbreak warrants the recall of a widely deployed commercial model, suggesting that such a standard could halt all new model deployments across the industry. This is not the first instance of Anthropic facing scrutiny from the U.S. administration; earlier this year, the Pentagon reportedly identified the company as an “unacceptable supply chain risk.” The current directive, however, takes a more direct approach by restricting access based on nationality.
The Significance of Fable 5 and Mythos 5
The Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models represent a significant advancement in AI capabilities for Anthropic. Fable 5 is designed as a versatile, general-purpose AI, while the Mythos 5 model has had certain cybersecurity safeguards adjusted. Mythos 5 was initially made available to organizations already participating in Anthropic’s Project Glasswing, a cybersecurity-focused program conducted in collaboration with the U.S. government.
The expansion of Project Glasswing to include approximately 150 organizations across more than 15 countries, including India, aims to enable participants to identify and remediate software vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. Despite these efforts, the recent suspension highlights the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding advanced AI development and deployment.
Reignited Debate on National AI Strategies
The suspension has amplified calls within India’s startup ecosystem for a more robust national AI strategy. Industry leaders emphasize the growing link between technological advancement and national power, advocating for increased investment in strategic technologies. This sentiment suggests a broader trend of re-evaluating global dependencies on foreign AI platforms and a push towards developing indigenous AI capabilities.
Founders and investors are urging governments to proactively support deep tech and AI development to ensure technological sovereignty. The incident serves as a critical reminder for startups and nations alike to avoid over-reliance on single frontier AI providers and to build resilience through multi-model architectures and alternative deployment strategies.
