Japan’s industrial machinery orders saw a remarkable year-on-year increase of 52.0% in June, reaching 1.11 trillion yen. This surge was primarily propelled by a substantial rise in overseas demand, which more than doubled, climbing 154.2%. This growth in foreign orders effectively offset a modest 1.8% decline in domestic orders.
Within the domestic market, while public-sector orders experienced a sharp decrease of 42.3%, orders from both the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors showed increases. This indicates a broader underlying strength in industrial activity despite a dip in government-related procurement.
The chemical machinery segment, including refrigeration equipment, emerged as a standout performer, with total demand soaring by 231.9%. This growth was supported by contributions from government, public-sector, and overseas orders. Tank orders also saw a significant increase of 150.8%, followed by conveyor machinery at 34.2%.
For the first half of the year, cumulative orders amounted to 4.36 trillion yen. The robust performance in machinery orders is a key indicator of capital expenditure across various industrial sectors, suggesting a positive outlook for investment in Japan’s industrial base.
