Passengers using mobile phones inside a Mumbai Metro Aqua Line train.
Commuters on Mumbai Metro’s Aqua Line can finally expect reliable mobile network connectivity, marking the end of a two-year dispute between telecom operators and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which operates the metro. The resolution allows Vodafone Idea and Airtel to roll out their services across the stations, with Jio expected to follow shortly.
The prolonged issue stemmed from disagreements over infrastructure rental costs. Telecom operators previously faced high charges for installing their equipment within metro stations. However, the new agreement establishes direct contracts between the telecom providers and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL). This direct contracting model is expected to significantly reduce infrastructure rental expenses for the operators.
This development is crucial for passenger experience, ensuring reliable communication, especially in underground sections where connectivity has been a persistent problem. The resolution is anticipated to improve the overall utility and convenience of the Aqua Line for its daily users.
