Cisplatin and Carboplatin vials on a pharmaceutical production line
India’s National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has approved a one-time 50% increase in the price caps for essential cancer drugs, cisplatin and carboplatin. This decision comes in response to widespread shortages of these critical medications across the country.
The price hike is attributed to a significant rise in the cost of platinum, a key raw material used in the manufacturing of these chemotherapy drugs. The surge in platinum prices had made it economically unviable for manufacturers to produce the drugs at the previously mandated ceiling prices, leading to supply disruptions.
The NPPA’s intervention aims to ensure the continued availability of these life-saving drugs for patients. The authority stated that the decision was made in the public interest to mitigate the impact of supply chain issues on healthcare facilities and patients undergoing cancer treatment.
