Woman prepares cooking gas cylinder outside home in a narrow Delhi alley.
New Delhi, India – The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced on Sunday that Indian households continue to benefit from some of the lowest cooking gas prices globally. This pricing strategy positions India significantly below its neighboring countries and far more affordable than developed nations such as the United States, Australia, and Canada.
The ministry detailed that beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a government scheme aimed at providing clean cooking fuel to women from Below Poverty Line households, currently pay an effective price of Rs 642 for a 14.2 kg cylinder. For general consumers in the capital, Delhi, the price stands at Rs 942 per cylinder.
This subsidized pricing is maintained despite the cost to supply a cylinder having risen to over Rs 1,600. The government’s continued commitment to keeping domestic LPG prices accessible underscores its policy focus on energy affordability for its vast population, particularly for the economically vulnerable segments targeted by the PMUY scheme.
