Guidelines for private sector participation in India's nuclear energy sector.
The Indian Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is set to introduce a new consulting subsidiary under the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL). This strategic move aims to facilitate and guide private companies looking to enter the nation’s burgeoning nuclear energy sector.
The proposed unit will offer comprehensive support, including design, engineering, and regulatory assistance, specifically for Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) units. This initiative follows the enactment of the SHANTI Act last year, which officially opened nuclear power generation to private investment, signaling a significant shift in India’s energy policy.
This development aligns with India’s ambitious target of achieving 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear capacity by 2047. By providing expert consultation and support, the DAE intends to streamline the entry process for private players, thereby accelerating the expansion of the country’s nuclear power infrastructure.
