Construction site of the Reliance Meta AI data centre, Jamnagar, India.
Global technology firm Meta has announced a strategic partnership with Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) to develop its inaugural AI-enabled data centre in India. The facility, slated for construction in Jamnagar, Gujarat, will initially feature a capacity of 168 MW, with provisions for future expansion. Reliance will undertake the construction and operational management of the data centre, which is anticipated to be operational within two years.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s founder and CEO, stated that the world-class facility in Jamnagar will enhance Meta’s global AI infrastructure while reinforcing its long-term commitment to the Indian economy. The data centre is designed to be powered by sustainable energy sources and utilize desalinated seawater for cooling, with Meta covering all operational costs.
This venture aligns with RIL’s expanding ambitions in artificial intelligence. The conglomerate has previously established a joint venture with Meta focused on building sovereign enterprise AI solutions using Meta’s open-source models. RIL has also set up an AI-focused subsidiary, Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Ltd, in which Meta holds a 30% stake.
To support the new data centre and its broader operations, Meta has also secured agreements for nearly 1 GW of clean and renewable energy in India through collaborations with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. These agreements will involve the installation of new solar and wind projects across various Indian states, ensuring Meta’s infrastructure is powered by renewable sources.
