India’s peak power demand reached an all-time high of 252.07 gigawatts (GW) on Friday, as mercury levels soared across the country, intensifying a heatwave.
The surge in electricity consumption is largely attributed to the increased use of cooling devices such as air conditioners and coolers. This trend is expected to continue as heatwave conditions are forecast to persist through the weekend and into the months of May and June.
The record demand highlights the growing pressure on India’s power infrastructure during periods of extreme weather. Experts anticipate further increases in demand as the summer progresses, underscoring the need for robust energy supply management and potential investments in power generation and grid capacity to meet escalating needs.
