Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman discusses AI cyber threats with banking officials.
New Delhi – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has issued a directive to the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) urging financial institutions to proactively address and combat the escalating cybersecurity threats posed by artificial intelligence.
The Minister’s call to action comes in response to the evolving landscape of cyber risks, specifically highlighting the potential challenges presented by advanced AI technologies, such as Anthropic’s Claude Mythos AI. In a significant move to spearhead these efforts, SBI Chairman Challa Srinivasulu Setty will lead a dedicated initiative under the IBA to explore and implement robust security measures.
Banks are now tasked with evaluating and investing in cutting-edge technologies, including AI itself, as a means to counter these sophisticated AI-borne cyber challenges. This strategic pivot aims to equip the banking sector with the necessary tools and expertise to stay ahead of potential malicious actors leveraging AI for cyberattacks.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is reportedly in active dialogue with international partners to enhance global preparedness and information sharing regarding these emerging threats, underscoring the transnational nature of cybersecurity risks in the digital age.
