Researchers at IIT Kharagpur's AI center analyze mining data on multiple screens.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has launched the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI-Enabled Geological & Mining Systems. This initiative, backed by a Rs 15 crore commitment, aims to significantly transform India’s mining sector by embedding Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the entire operational lifecycle.
The center will focus on leveraging AI for applications ranging from mineral exploration to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) analytics. This strategic move is intended to convert India’s data-rich but often information-poor mining environments into highly efficient, data-driven ecosystems. The integration of AI is expected to drive advancements in geological surveying, operational planning, safety protocols, and environmental impact assessment within the industry.
The establishment of this center signifies a major step towards modernizing the mining industry in India, aligning it with global technological advancements and addressing the growing demand for sustainable and responsible resource extraction.
