Emcure Pharmaceuticals has reduced the price of its semaglutide injection by an average of 47%, with the starting dose now 55% cheaper at Rs 3,999 per month (four weekly doses). This move aims to make the medication more accessible to patients in India.
Semaglutide, originally developed by Novo Nordisk, is available as a once-weekly pen device in five strengths: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg, and a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg. The highest dose is priced at Rs 8,999 for a month’s supply.
The price cut reflects a growing trend among pharmaceutical companies to offer more affordable alternatives in the diabetes and weight management market. Emcure’s decision could intensify competition and potentially increase market penetration for semaglutide in India.
