Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of the AWS Sustainability console, a new service designed to consolidate AWS sustainability reporting and resources into a single location. This standalone console provides sustainability teams with independent access to Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions data without requiring billing permissions.
The AWS Sustainability console builds upon the existing Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (CCFT) and introduces new capabilities. A key feature is its independent permissions model, which allows sustainability professionals to access emissions data directly, separate from billing data. The console includes Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions attributed to AWS usage, broken down by AWS Region and service, such as Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). The underlying data and methodology remain consistent with those used by the CCFT.
The console features a Reports page, enabling users to download preset monthly and annual carbon emissions reports covering both market-based method (MBM) and location-based method (LBM) data. Users can also create custom comma-separated values (CSV) reports by selecting specific fields, time granularity, and filters. The console can be configured to align with an organization’s fiscal year, ensuring data views and exports reflect the correct reporting period.
Additionally, a new API and AWS SDKs allow integration of emissions data into existing reporting pipelines, dashboards, or compliance workflows. This is particularly useful for organizations needing to pull data for specific months across numerous accounts or establish custom account groupings that differ from their AWS Organizations structure.
The AWS Sustainability console is available at no additional cost and can be accessed through the AWS Management Console. Historical data is available from January 2022, allowing users to explore emissions trends immediately. More information about AWS’s commitment to sustainability can be found on the AWS Sustainability page.
