India’s urea production has reached 275.75 lakh tons (27.57 million tons) during April-February of FY’26, according to government data. This milestone underscores the impact of policies aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing in the fertilizer sector.
Currently, 33 urea manufacturing units are operational, contributing to a substantial production capacity. The government has actively implemented measures to enhance domestic urea output, aligning with the broader ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The increased domestic production is expected to reduce India’s reliance on urea imports, stabilizing fertilizer supply chains and supporting the agriculture sector. This shift also has implications for the government’s subsidy burden, potentially leading to fiscal savings.
Looking ahead, further investments in expanding urea production capacity are anticipated, driven by the government’s continued focus on self-sufficiency in fertilizer production. These investments may include the adoption of advanced technologies to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
