Indian spacetech startup GalaxEye has secured a US patent for its proprietary OptoSAR technology, a significant milestone that strengthens the firm’s intellectual property portfolio as it targets global expansion. The patented technology synchronizes optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors to provide spatially and temporally aligned earth observation data, enabling weather-agnostic imaging for sectors including defense, agriculture, and disaster management.
The US patent grant follows the successful launch of GalaxEye’s first satellite, Mission Drishti, in May 2026. While the company lost contact with the 190 kg satellite in July due to a geomagnetic solar storm, the mission successfully validated key operational infrastructure and core hardware architecture. The startup, which has raised $26.9 Mn in funding from investors including Speciale Invest, Mela Ventures, and Anicut Capital, is now preparing for two additional satellite launches over the next two years.
Strategically, the move to secure international patent protection underscores GalaxEye’s ambition to scale its operations beyond the domestic market. The company recently deepened its engineering capabilities through the acquisition of StarOps, a spacecraft engineering firm. This move aligns with a broader trend of increased private capital flow into the Indian space sector, which saw funding surge 94% to $157 Mn in 2025, according to industry data.
As the company eyes a 30-satellite constellation over the next five years, the US patent serves as a critical asset for protecting its market positioning against international competitors. The firm continues to build out its commercial pipeline, catering to a diverse set of domestic and international enterprise clients.
