Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has directed banks to intensify their outreach to non-resident Indians (NRIs) with the primary objective of boosting foreign currency inflows into the country. This strategic push aims to strengthen India’s foreign exchange reserves and provide support to the Indian rupee.
During recent discussions, banks reported a notable interest from NRIs across various global jurisdictions. In response, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is actively collaborating with financial institutions to support their efforts in mobilizing deposits from this crucial demographic. The focus is on developing and promoting innovative deposit products that are attractive to NRIs, thereby encouraging them to channel their savings and investments into India.
This initiative is seen as a vital step in ensuring greater financial stability and economic resilience for India, particularly in the current global economic climate. By tapping into the significant financial capacity of the Indian diaspora, the government and the central bank aim to create a more robust financial ecosystem.
