Global production volumes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) are set to fall significantly short of industry needs, according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Willie Walsh. Projections indicate that SAF production will reach approximately 2.4 million tonnes in 2026. This volume represents a mere 0.8% of the total aviation fuel consumption and comes with a substantial financial burden for airlines, estimated at USD 4.3 billion.
The disappointing output figures underscore the ongoing challenges in scaling up SAF production to meet climate goals within the aviation sector. Walsh’s remarks highlight the critical need for increased investment and policy support to accelerate the transition to more sustainable aviation fuels.
