Engineers exchange an AI chip in a data center, symbolizing Meta and Broadcom's partnership.
Meta Platforms Inc. has entered a strategic partnership with Broadcom to develop next-generation MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator) chips aimed at bolstering Meta’s AI capabilities. The deal includes an initial commitment from Meta to deploy 1 gigawatt of these AI chips, with plans for expansion to multiple gigawatts, leveraging Broadcom’s technology.
The collaboration also involves a transition in leadership roles, with Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stepping down from Meta’s board to serve as an advisor. This change was disclosed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and a Meta blog post, highlighting the deepening partnership between the two tech giants.
Broadcom stated that the MTIA chips will be the industry’s first 2nm AI compute accelerators, designed for sustained, multi-year infrastructure deployment. Meta’s co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, emphasized that the partnership with Broadcom, encompassing chip design, packaging, and networking, is critical for establishing the computing infrastructure required to deliver advanced AI capabilities to billions of users.
Under the terms of the agreement, Broadcom will collaborate on the design and packaging of these AI chips, as well as the development of networking systems. This integrated approach is expected to provide Meta with a robust computing backbone capable of supporting real-time AI features for its extensive user base.
The partnership is built upon Broadcom’s XPU platform, which will facilitate the creation of custom AI chips and enable upgrades to Meta’s AI hardware across future generations. Additionally, Broadcom will supply advanced Ethernet technology to ensure rapid data transfer and seamless communication among large clusters of AI machines.
Hock Tan of Broadcom highlighted that this initial MTIA deployment marks the beginning of a long-term, multi-generational roadmap aimed at accommodating massive growth in the coming years, underscoring Broadcom’s leadership in AI networking and its foundational XPU custom accelerator platform. This collaboration reflects a significant investment in AI infrastructure, positioning Meta to enhance its services with advanced AI capabilities.
