Indian family taking delivery of a new compact hatchback at a dealership showroom
India’s compact car segment is experiencing a significant revival, with sales of mini cars doubling in the last quarter after a prolonged three-year slump. This resurgence is largely attributed to recent reductions in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, which have made these more affordable for consumers.
Entry-level hatchbacks, defined as vehicles under 3.6 meters in length, witnessed an impressive 107% year-on-year increase in sales. This marks a strong recovery from a previous period where sales had plummeted by 62% from their peak, primarily due to escalating costs.
The renewed demand for these economical vehicles indicates a shifting market preference towards cost-effective transportation solutions. The GST rate cuts have effectively lowered the ownership cost, stimulating consumer interest and driving sales volumes in this segment of the automotive market.
