Rooftops with solar panels cover an urban residential area in India.
India’s ambitious rooftop solar initiative, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, is rapidly approaching a significant milestone, with projections indicating it will cover over 7.5 million homes by the end of the year. As of recent reports, approximately 4 million households have already benefited from the scheme, which was launched in February 2024.
The program is specifically designed to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar energy, with a particular focus on families consuming between 1 to 3 kilowatts of electricity. The strong public interest is evident, with over 6.5 million applications currently in the pipeline, signaling substantial momentum and a positive reception to the government’s push for renewable energy solutions at the household level.
