Hand reaching for a tetra pack beverage on a supermarket shelf
The Supreme Court of India has initiated a review concerning the packaging of alcoholic beverages, specifically those sold in tetra packs and sachets. The court has flagged these packaging formats as potentially deceptive, drawing parallels to fruit juice packaging and raising concerns about the inconspicuous nature of the branding.
A key point of contention is the alleged lack of clear warning labels on these products. The court is examining whether such packaging could inadvertently appeal to underage consumers. In light of these concerns, notices have been issued to the central government, along with manufacturers including Globus Spirits and Wave Distilleries, to solicit their perspectives.
The apex court is expected to hear further arguments on this issue on August 10, where it anticipates receiving a response from the government regarding its stance and any potential regulatory actions it may consider.
