The Oman Athletics Association recently organized a vibrant festival in Nizwa and Bahla, aimed at engaging children and young people in sports. This initiative not only fostered athletic activity, skill development, and confidence among participants but also coincided with the observance of International Children’s Athletics Day and the global World Mile Challenge. The latter commemorates the 70th anniversary of Roger Bannister’s groundbreaking four-minute mile achieved on May 6, 1954. The 2024 World Mile Challenge encouraged participation through running, jogging, or walking a mile, with a global tracker monitoring collective progress from May 1 to May 19.
Approximately 80 children, accompanied by a dedicated team of athletes, coaches, technical staff, and physical education teachers, took part in a series of engaging competitions held within the historic settings of Nizwa and Bahla’s souq and fort. Complementing the athletic events, the festival incorporated cultural activities, including traditional folk art performances like Al Razha, pottery making, palm frond crafts, and the sampling of Omani cuisine. These elements provided the children with an immersive experience of the local heritage. A significant objective for the Oman Athletics Association was to introduce children to the discipline of athletics while simultaneously promoting the rich tourism and heritage of Nizwa.
Khalfan bin Hamad al Waeli, a respected board member of the Oman Athletics Association, highlighted the significance of the festival, stating that it celebrated World Children’s Athletics Day under the International Federation’s banner, ‘Global Mile Challenge.’ He further elaborated on the global nature of the event, noting that countries worldwide observe this occasion in their distinct ways, all while adhering to the guidelines set forth by the International Federation. The festival culminated in a celebratory awards ceremony, where sponsors were honored, and certificates and gifts were distributed to the participating children. Saud al Farqani, a member of the Municipal Council in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, graced the occasion as the guest of honor.
In parallel, the Ministry of Sports Affairs has launched the second season of its comprehensive School Sports Days Programme. This program is designed to engage students aged 7 to 10 from both private and international schools across the nation. The initiative, now in its ninth year, is dedicated to raising sports awareness, cultivating technical skills among young athletes, and identifying promising talents who could potentially represent national teams or benefit from specialized training at youth training centers.
Further underscoring Oman’s commitment to sports development is the nation’s longest-running summer program, now celebrating its 13th edition. This extensive initiative is dedicated to equipping individuals up to the age of 30 with essential skills and knowledge across a wide spectrum of sports. The program actively promotes the ‘Sports for all’ philosophy, encouraging broad participation from both Omani citizens and expatriate residents. With support from key private sector sponsors, including Ooredoo and Hala FM, this initiative aims to cultivate a generation that is not only healthy but also possesses a strong foundation of sporting skills and awareness.
