India initiates a 1.7 million tonne urea import tender for the rabi season.
India has initiated a tender to import 1.7 million tonnes of urea to bolster domestic supplies ahead of the critical rabi agricultural season. This move follows a period of significant volatility in the country’s fertilizer import volumes.
Data from the Fertilizer Association of India (FAI) indicates that urea imports surged to 4.75 million tonnes between April and August, more than doubling from the 2.04 million tonnes recorded during the same period in 2025. This increase persists despite a 4.4% rise in domestic production, which reached 12.54 million tonnes over the same timeframe.
The strategic decision to source additional volume via international markets reflects the government’s focus on maintaining price stability and supply security for the agricultural sector. As India continues to balance its domestic manufacturing capacity with the high demands of its agrarian economy, the reliance on global markets remains a key factor for institutional stakeholders and commodities analysts monitoring the chemical and fertilizer sectors.
This tender serves as a critical indicator for global fertilizer markets, as India remains one of the world’s largest importers of the commodity. The procurement strategy is aimed at ensuring that supply chain bottlenecks do not disrupt the upcoming planting season, highlighting the ongoing importance of trade policy in managing national food security.
