Reliance Industries, a major Indian conglomerate, is reportedly exploring a significant expansion into the aluminium production sector. This strategic consideration could see the company leverage its existing and upcoming coal gasification initiatives to support metal manufacturing processes.
The move signifies a potential diversification for Reliance, with the company having already procured tender documents for a substantial bauxite block located in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. Bauxite is the primary ore used in the production of aluminium.
In parallel, Reliance is actively progressing with a coal gasification project in Andhra Pradesh. The synergy between coal gasification, which can produce synthesis gas (syngas) used in various industrial processes, and aluminium smelting is a key aspect of this potential venture. This integration could offer operational efficiencies and cost advantages.
The news comes as rival conglomerate Adani Group is reportedly lining up a significant investment of approximately $11.5 billion in Odisha, which is also expected to include aluminium-related ventures. The parallel developments highlight a growing interest and investment surge in India’s metals and mining sector.
While Reliance has not officially confirmed its plans for aluminium production, the acquisition of tender documents for the bauxite block suggests a concrete step towards evaluating this opportunity. The company’s strategy appears to focus on creating a vertically integrated operation, linking energy production through coal gasification with raw material sourcing and manufacturing.
