Technicians collaborate on payment system hardware development in a cluttered workshop.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is reportedly working on a unified, interoperable infrastructure for UPI soundboxes. This initiative aims to enable merchants to use a single device to process payments from any UPI application, streamlining their operations and reducing hardware duplication.
Sources indicate that the proposed back-end infrastructure will allow merchants to accept payments via any QR code and receive transaction confirmations through a single soundbox, irrespective of the customer’s payment app. This move is expected to significantly benefit merchants, particularly small businesses and retailers, who currently often require separate soundbox devices for different payment providers such as Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay.
While the development promises greater efficiency for merchants, it could impact the revenue streams of fintech companies that typically charge rental fees for their proprietary soundbox devices. The adoption of soundboxes has seen a surge among various merchant categories, including kirana stores, street vendors, and restaurants, with companies like Paytm and PhonePe reporting significant deployment numbers and even integrating advanced features like AI-driven business insights.
The NPCI’s initiative aligns with the broader trend of UPI becoming the dominant digital payment method in India, with transaction volumes continuing to grow substantially. This move towards interoperability in soundbox technology is anticipated to further bolster digital payment adoption across the country by simplifying the payment acceptance process for businesses.
