Overcrowded passenger train in Kangra Valley, India
A passenger advocacy group has formally requested Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishaw to reinstate all seven train services on the Pathankot-Kangra line. The plea comes amid escalating concerns over severe overcrowding and unsafe travel conditions experienced by commuters in the Kangra Valley.
The train services on this route were suspended for approximately four years following damage caused by floods. While two pairs of trains have since resumed operations, the limited services are insufficient to meet passenger demand, leading to a significant increase in overcrowding.
Passengers are reportedly resorting to perilous travel practices, including standing at the doors of the coaches, due to the sheer volume of people on the limited six-coach trains. The passenger body’s appeal highlights the urgent need for increased capacity and frequency to ensure the safety and comfort of travelers on this vital route.
