Oil tanker unloading crude oil at a refinery in India
New Delhi – Indian refiners significantly boosted their crude oil imports in June, with Russia emerging as the leading supplier, closely followed by a near-record volume from the United Arab Emirates. This strategic shift underscores a growing trend of diversification driven by attractive pricing from Russian crude and underlying concerns regarding the security of transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The increased reliance on these suppliers highlights a proactive approach by Indian refiners to secure energy supplies amidst potential geopolitical disruptions. Venezuela is also noted to be playing an increasingly important role in India’s energy imports, indicating a broader recalibration of trade routes and supplier relationships.
While the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz suggests a gradual normalization of supply routes, the current import patterns reflect a pragmatic response to market dynamics and risk management. The recovery of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplies is anticipated to be among the first indicators of a return to more stable international energy flows.
