Mattel Acquires Mattel163 for $159M: MoFo & Zhong Lun Advise

Mattel has completed the acquisition of mobile game studio Mattel163, securing full ownership by purchasing the remaining 50% equity interest from its joint venture partner, NetEase. The transaction, valued at USD159 million, places Mattel163’s total valuation at USD318 million.

Morrison Foerster (MoFo) and Zhong Lun Law Firm provided legal counsel to Mattel throughout the acquisition process. This strategic move aims to significantly enhance Mattel’s digital games business, extending its toy brands into the virtual realm through immersive digital experiences and games.

MoFo offered expertise on US, Hong Kong, and PRC law, while Zhong Lun handled PRC legal services, covering antitrust, tax, and data compliance aspects of the deal. The acquisition underscores Mattel’s focus on expanding its digital footprint and leveraging its intellectual property in the gaming sector.
