India extends SIM-binding deadline for OTT apps.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has extended the deadline for over-the-top (OTT) platforms to implement SIM-binding to December 31, granting the industry additional time to comply with the new regulations. This decision follows pushback from industry stakeholders who raised concerns about the initial timeline.
Under the revised guidelines, web and desktop sessions will now only require immediate logout in cases of suspected fraud, providing a more flexible approach. The full implementation of SIM-binding across all platforms is anticipated by October-November 2026. This measure aims to enhance security and combat digital fraud, including digital arrests, by linking user identity to their SIM cards.
SIM-binding is designed to add an extra layer of security to OTT applications by ensuring that only authorized users can access accounts. The extension allows OTT platforms to refine their implementation strategies and address technical challenges. The move reflects ongoing efforts to balance security enhancements with user experience and industry feasibility.
