G.R. Balasubramaniam transformed a humble butter business into GRB Dairy Foods, an Indian ghee powerhouse with over Rs 1,400 crore in annual revenue. What’s more remarkable? The company achieved this scale without ever accepting external investment.
Balasubramaniam’s journey began in Virupatchi, a small village in Tamil Nadu. Pulled out of school at 13, he worked in his brother-in-law’s butter business, learning the trade from the ground up. After 14 years, he ventured out on his own with just Rs 3,000.
GRB Dairy Foods now sells ghee, sweets, snacks, and spices in over 40 countries, employing 2,000 people. Balasubramaniam credits his hands-on experience and unwavering commitment to quality for his success. He focused on producing high-quality ghee using traditional methods, setting it apart from competitors.
In 1984, Balasubramaniam started his own business. He identified an opportunity to improve the quality and consistency of ghee production. By making the ghee at home, and selling the finished product directly to hotels, sweet shops, and households, he was able to get a foothold in the market.
GRB’s growth strategy involved building an FMCG-style distribution network, a novel approach in the ghee industry. Balasubramaniam appointed distributors and hired salesmen to reach individual retail shops, mirroring the strategies of major consumer goods companies.
Despite offers to lower prices, Balasubramaniam maintained a premium on quality, which he says was non-negotiable. This commitment resonated with customers and fueled organic growth through word-of-mouth.
Today, Balasubramaniam’s sons manage the company’s operations. Dhanraj oversees commercial strategy, while Balakarthik manages production. The company continues to expand, with exports to over 40 countries and a focus on maintaining its quality-driven reputation.
Balasubramaniam’s one regret? Not completing his education. But his journey from selling butter on a bicycle to building a multi-million dollar company is a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to quality.
