Aircraft assembly line in India at sunset.
Airbus SE is considering establishing a final assembly line (FAL) in India for its ATR regional aircraft, according to recent reports. This move aligns with the Indian government’s efforts to enhance connectivity in smaller cities and expand the regional aviation sector.
The European aerospace giant is reportedly in discussions to assess the business viability of setting up the FAL. Airbus already operates two FALs in India through its partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited, indicating an existing manufacturing footprint and established operational capabilities within the country.
The potential establishment of an ATR aircraft assembly line follows a similar consideration by Embraer, signaling increasing interest from global aerospace manufacturers in leveraging India’s growing aviation market and manufacturing capabilities. The Indian government’s focus on regional connectivity, through initiatives like the UDAN scheme, is driving demand for regional aircraft and creating opportunities for manufacturers.
If realized, the Airbus FAL would not only boost local manufacturing but also potentially reduce aircraft costs and delivery times for regional airlines, further supporting the expansion of air travel to smaller cities. This strategic move could also enhance Airbus’s competitive position in the Indian market and strengthen its partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited.
