Sunil Bharti Mittal and Gopal Vittal with a digital map of Africa.
Sunil Bharti Mittal is set to retire as the Chair of Airtel Africa in July 2026, marking a significant leadership transition for the telecom giant. Gopal Vittal will take over as the Non-Executive Chair, following a nomination by the controlling shareholder, while Shravin Bharti Mittal will assume the role of Deputy Chair.
The company announced that Annika Poutiainen will also retire from her position. Mittal expressed strong confidence in Airtel Africa’s strategic direction and leadership capabilities as he departs.
Gopal Vittal’s appointment underscores a continuity in leadership, given his extensive background in the telecommunications sector. His nomination reflects the controlling shareholder’s intent to maintain a steady course for Airtel Africa.
This transition occurs as Airtel Africa navigates the evolving telecom landscape in various African markets, focusing on expanding its 4G coverage and mobile money services. The leadership change could signal a refinement of strategies in these areas, with Vittal’s experience expected to play a crucial role.
