LaGuardia Airport is experiencing significant flight disruptions following a runway collision involving an Air Canada Express flight. The incident occurred late Sunday night when the flight collided with a fire truck while landing.
As of Monday morning, at least 295 departing flights from LaGuardia have been canceled, with an additional 15 flights delayed, according to FlightAware. Incoming flights have also been affected, with at least 288 flights canceled and 19 delayed.
In total, FlightAware data indicates that 582 flights to and from LaGuardia have been canceled, and 34 flights have been delayed.
The Air Canada Express CRJ-900 jet, operated by Jazz Aviation, was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members when the incident occurred. The flight, designated Flight 4686, originated from Montreal. The collision resulted in damage to the aircraft’s nose.
Initial reports indicated that the fire truck was responding to a separate incident involving a United Airlines aircraft that had reported an odor issue.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the collision. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the airport was expected to remain closed until 2 p.m. ET.
LaGuardia Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States, serving over 30 million passengers annually. The flight disruptions add to existing travel challenges related to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which has been affected by the partial government shutdown.
