Inside a modern EAF plant, molten metal glows as scrap is fed for sustainable steel production.
Tata Steel has inaugurated a ₹3,200 crore scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) plant in Ludhiana, marking a significant step towards sustainable steel production. The 0.75 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) facility will produce Tata Tiscon rebar using 100% scrap material and approximately 50% renewable energy.
The new plant aims to achieve sub-0.3 tCO₂ emissions per tonne of steel, significantly reducing its carbon footprint compared to traditional steelmaking processes. This initiative aligns with Tata Steel’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing its carbon emissions.
By utilizing scrap and renewable energy, the Ludhiana plant exemplifies a circular economy approach, turning waste into valuable resources while minimizing environmental impact. This investment reflects the growing trend of steel manufacturers adopting greener technologies to meet increasing demand for sustainable steel products.
